NSF Workshop on Predictive Intelligence for Pandemic Prevention

RSVP Event Website

The potential exists to move toward a world free from the threat of infectious disease outbreaks and global pandemics—and the associated mass casualties and large-scale economic disruption—enabled by predictive intelligence of future outbreaks in an integrated system of rapid detection, analysis, modeling, and countermeasures. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is exploring research that advances the state-of-the-art in forecasting the emergence and mitigating the spread of pathogens and infectious disease through integrated biological and technical advances in sensing, modeling, and analytics.

The NSF Predictive Intelligence for Pandemic Prevention (PIPP) Workshop – Pandemic Readiness for Emerging Pathogens (PREP) will foster scientific discussion and catalyze innovation and partnerships to significantly enhance our understanding of the challenges and potential solutions to rapid detection and assessment of emerging pathogens and infectious disease dynamics from the molecular to the ecological scale.

The tentative panel topics are:

1) Rapid and Accurate Detection and Assessment of Emerging Pathogens

2) Environmental Change, Monitoring Animal Movements, and High-Risk Interfaces for Disease Transmission

3) Monitoring Human Movements and At-risk Communities for Disease Transmission and Spread

4) Data-Intensive Machine Learning and Modelling for Pandemic Preparedness.

This workshop will bring together specialists who are advancing our capacity for rapid pathogen detection, biosensing, and the tracking of human and non-human populations for the purpose of risk modelling and pandemic preparedness. The outcome of the workshop is to highlight the engineering, mathematical, statistical, and computational developments in concert with novel sensor designs with applications for surveillance, forecasting, and responding to the spread of infectious diseases.
