LEADERs Program
Spring 2025 – Building a Healthcare Research Organization within Walmart

Organization Description:

Launched in October 2022, Walmart Healthcare Research Institute SM (WHRI) aims to increase community access to healthcare research and innovative medicines by focusing on diseases that impact our communities. We are building out an RWE Center of Excellence with the aim of using our infrastructure, patient reach, and store/pharmacy locations to support drug development and other public health initiatives in collaboration with industry and academic partners. The core of WHRI’s work to date has been focused on identifying potentially eligible patients for clinical trial recruitment based on our pharmacy data, and we are actively building out our capabilities to support retrospective and prospective analyses.

Project Description:

WHRI is looking for a detail-oriented and self-motivated researcher (epidemiology, biostatistics, population health, informatics, or similar field) who is interested in supporting the build of our research team and infrastructure. The main project is to create an amalgamation ofclinical, data, and research components to generate a lexicon which will be used in research and data query functions. Specifically, the LEADER would be given a set of conditions or medical topics, and they would research and compile lists of specific clinical ontologies, medication identifiers, and related clinical information that could be used to both identify the conditions or topics within a data set and assist with interpreting findings from the data queries. There may be an opportunity to support analytic requests by contributing to literature reviews, methods development, data analysis, and summarizing results.

Some examples of areas of work, depending on skill sets & training:

  • Support IRB approval for an umbrella protocol for retrospective analyses
  • Evaluation of third party data for data linkage
  • Evaluation of vendors to support expert determination
  • Creating summaries from literature reviews & data feasibilities to support client conversations

Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes Required:

  • Knowledge of research methods & scientific processes
  • Project management skills
  • Good written, verbal, and presentation skills
  • Understanding of HIPAA

Competencies Preferred:

  • Exposure to real-world data and real-world evidence
  • Understanding of different coding systems used in US Healthcare (e.g., ICD codes, CPT codes, NDC/GPI codes, etc.)
