LEADERs Program
Spring 2023 – Smart LC Experimentation @Waters

Location:  Cambridge, MA / Milford, MA

About Waters:

Waters Corporation, headquartered in Milford, Massachusetts, develops, manufactures and services instruments and software for analytical Liquid Chromatography (LC) and Mass Spectrometry (MS) Systems. Our customers work from the early stages of drug discovery through final quality control and assurance. Since these instruments go through a rapid rate of technological change, Waters makes significant investments in research and development to meet/exceed customers’ needs/expectations.

The Waters Informatics Research group researches and develops prototypes of data analysis tools that process and extract information and insights from raw signals data coming from our instruments. We are currently researching the use of time series analysis to characterize the instruments in various error states, and also to predict time to future failures. The goal is to create models, using current python libraries, that will generalize for detection of many kinds of failures. This requires the creation of highly controlled, high quality data that will be used to train the machine learning models.

LEADERs Opportunity: Smart LC Experimentation

The role of this fellowship will be to help create a design of experiments, and to execute those experiments on the LC to generate data. The student will devise ways to evaluate the integrity of the data and run these evaluations to measure whether the data set needs to be augmented and by what additional data.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate on design of experiments to run on the LC
  • Set up the sample sets per the design and run the experiments
  • Use a web app to annotate the data sets with appropriate labels with guidance from subject matter experts
  • Run the models developed by the machine learning engineers to evaluate their performance, and differentiate the impact of the data set on their performance
  • Create training data sets and test sets with factors not present in the training set

Required Qualifications:

  • Comfort level operating an LC, and using a LIMS (preferably Empower)
  • Experience with HPLC method development
  • Chemistry background
  • Background with design of experiments
  • Some Background and working knowledge in biostatistics
