AAAS Science News Writing Internship

Science Magazine, the largest circulating weekly of basic research — founded in 1880 by Thomas Alva Edison and published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) — offers an internship program for news writers. Science accepts applications for four 6-month periods: January through June, April through September, July through December, and October through March.

The paid internship provides for travel to and from the internship site in Washington, DC. Living accommodations and expenses are the responsibility of the Intern.

Eligibility
  • Applicants should have completed their undergraduate education or be in the senior year of college when they apply.
  • They should also have an interest and preferably experience in writing about science for a broad (i.e. non-technical) audience, and should be prepared to report, research, write, and edit under daily deadlines.
  • A background in science is preferred, but not required.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have published science journalism articles, have freelanced for or interned at other science news publications, and/or have completed a journalism or science writing program.
