Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program
The Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program offers nationally competitive fellowship awards to postdoctoral and senior scientists to perform collaborative research at U.S. Air Force research facilities across the country. Since 1966, the Air Force S&T Enterprise has hosted over 1,000 fellows under the NRC Research Associateship Programs and many of these researchers have gone on to successful careers in government laboratories. The Air Force Science & Technology Fellowship Program continues this tradition of providing high quality research opportunities with Air Force scientists and engineers at Air Force Research Laboratory, the Air Force Institute of Technology, and the U.S. Air Force Academy.
AIR FORCE RESEARCH LABORATORY (AFRL)
AFRL is the only Air Force organization wholly dedicated to leading the discovery, development, and integration of warfighting technologies for the nation’s air, space, and cyberspace forces. AFRL can trace its roots back to organizations that began their activities during the First World War, 100 years ago. Visions of early airpower leaders such as General Hap Arnold and Dr. Theodore von Karman were instrumental to the research and development programs since they understood science as the key in air supremacy. Today, the lab and its predecessors have overseen more than 80 years of critical research efforts for the Air Force and Department of Defense. AFRL technology breakthroughs can be found in all of today’s modern aircraft and weapon systems. AFRL continues to build on this paradigm-shifting research heritage by unleashing the power of innovative air and space technology for the warfighter. The passionate commitment of our scientist and engineers to strengthen the discovery of revolutionary technology inspires new warfighting capabilities, develops solutions to satisfy known gaps, and rapidly responds to urgent warfighting technology needs. AFRL is excited about the mission that lies ahead whether in air, space, or cyberspace and will continue to provide unprecedented technology as an important strategic asset for the Air Force. AIR FORCE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (AFIT)
AFIT is the Air Force’s graduate school of engineering and management as well as its institution for technical professional continuing education. A component of Air University and Air Education and Training Command, AFIT is committed to providing defense-focused graduate and professional continuing education and research to sustain the technological supremacy of America’s air and space forces. AFIT’s research programs complements its graduate education programs, allowing students to develop enhanced understanding of their disciplines’ fundamental principles as well as appreciation of the most pressing unanswered questions. Consistent with the AFIT mission, its basic and applied research projects primarily focus on problems related to current or anticipated Air Force and Department of Defense needs. U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY (USAFA)
USAFA is a military academy for officer candidates for the United States Air Force. The Academy’s stated mission is “to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become leaders of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation.” Graduates of the Academy’s four-year program receive a Bachelor of Science degree, and are commissioned as second lieutenants in the United States Air Force. In addition to a rigorous military training regimen, cadets also take a broad academic course load with an extensive core curriculum in engineering, humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, military studies and physical education. Prospective applicants to the AFRL Research Associateship Fellowship Program must select a research project from among the large group of Research Opportunities listed on this website. Prior to completing an application, prospective applicants should contact the proposed Research Adviser to assure that funding will be available if their application is recommended by NRC Research Associateship Program panels. Once mutual interest is established between a prospective applicant and a Research Adviser, an application is submitted through the NRC Research Associateship Programs online system. Reviews of applications to AFRL are conducted four times each year, and review results are available approximately six to eight weeks following the application deadline.
Education and Experience – Applicants must have earned a Ph.D., Sc.D., M.D., D.V.M., or academically equivalent research doctorate before beginning tenure.
Level – Associateship awards are offered at the postdoctoral and senior researcher level.
Postdoctoral Associateships – Applicants must have held the doctorate for less than five years at the time of application.
Senior Associateships – Applicants will have held the doctorate five years or more at the time of application or will hold a permanent appointment in academia, government, or industry and have research experience that has resulted in significant contributions and recognition as established investigators in their specialized fields.
