Applied Epidemiology Fellowship Program

Deadline: 01/20/2023

CSTE, in collaboration with CDC, the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), established the Applied Epidemiology Fellowship to train recent graduates in the expanding field of applied epidemiology. The goal of the Fellowship is to provide a high quality training experience and to secure long-term career placement for Fellows at the state or local level. Participating fellows will receive two years of on-the-job training at a state or local health agency under the guidance of an experienced mentor. The Fellowship’s mission is to meet the nation’s ongoing need for applied epidemiology workforce capacity in state and local health departments through a national fellowship-training program.

The Fellowship focuses on balancing three key concepts as identified in Applied Epidemiology and Training Program (AETP) Development Handbook (McDonnell, 2002):

  • Provide service to the sponsoring agency
  • Create and train a core group of public health workers
  • Strengthen capacity in applied epidemiology across public health institutions
Duration

Annual

Funding
  • Effective November 29, 2023, the fellowship stipend will be $55,505.84 for master’s level and $70,905.90 for doctoral level fellows. Effective December 1, 2022, CSTE will no longer be reimbursing health insurance due to the stipend increase to support the cost of fellows’ health insurance premiums.
  • The stipend is a fixed non-negotiable amount.
  • The stipend is a taxable amount. CSTE assumes no tax liability and will not submit a Form 1099 at the end of the year during the fellow’s training but will provide a summary of earnings for each calendar year. Fellows should seek individual tax advice as necessary from qualified professionals. There will be a Tax Workshop Session during the AEF Orientation in that will provide general guidance on income taxes for fellows.

Moving/Relocation Expenses:
Up to $2,000 will be provided for moving related expenses.

Professional Development:
$1,470 per year is provided to each fellow for professional development. This stipend can be used for travel to meetings or conferences, short-term training programs, purchasing work-related books, and classes intended to aid in work-related projects.
