Center Grant Development Manager
The Office of Research Development at Northeastern University is positioned under the Office of the Sr. Vice Provost for Research and supports Northeastern research, scholarship, creativity and innovation within the Research Division. The office provides specific assistance to all Northeastern faculty and researchers across the global network, in the development and submission of research proposals and with professional development opportunities for faculty and researchers, and works collaboratively across the research development ecosystem at Northeastern.
This position will report to the Director of Research Development, with a goal of strengthening and enhancing research support within the central Office of Research Development while providing research administration support to faculty and research staff at all Northeastern University campuses for large, complex center grant submissions. This position performs diversified and complex administrative, financial and pre-award submission for a high volume of complex and competitive grant proposals in a fast-paced deadline driven environment. Submissions will include interdisciplinary research proposals, research center proposals, military contract vehicles and proposals for multiple investigators. We seek a highly collaborative and versatile colleague with attention to detail, strong organizational skills and a professional communication style. The Center Grant Development Manager will be a critical and valued member of the Northeastern Office of Research Development (ORD), and will work to cultivate a strong research culture and growth within this national R1 research university.
Working with members of the Research Development team, the Center Grant Development Manager will provide the following essential functions:
- Research administration support to large/complex research proposals
- Manage the administration and internal approval of research and special project proposals and contracts for submission to federal, state and private funding sources
- Provide expert advice on agency, institutional and government proposal compliance to university faculty and Principal Investigators as assigned
- Manage the planning and development of grant or contract supported projects and programs
- Provide critical analysis and guidance in the review and interpretation of opportunity announcement documents, in collaboration with RD staff as needed
- Develop budgets and budget narratives sufficient to support project or program activities and ensure consistency with applicable requirements
- Prepare and submit timely routing documentation for internal proposal submission approvals
- Act as the primary liaison between Principal Investigator and the NU-RES for all pre-award and proposal matters
Location: Remote hiring available, but preference given to Boston, Massachusetts.
Approximate hiring range: $65,000+
• Bachelor’s degree in a research related field, plus four years of experience in research administration with an emphasis on multi-investigator and/or center grant proposal development; experience may be substituted for required academic qualifications. • Demonstrated pre-award financial management experience, including proposal development and management. • Familiarity and experience with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts, subcontracts, and cooperative agreements. Knowledge of NIH and NSF award mechanisms is desirable. • Knowledge of program administration guidelines for both federal and non-federal funding agencies. • Ability to understand and apply university policies and procedures, as well as the laws, rules and regulations pertaining to grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, sub-awards and subcontracts. • Ability to work independently, and to work as a team member with other central administrative units of the University. • Ability to plan ahead, prioritize, and work under pressure in a deadline-oriented environment in which workload ebbs and flows and can require the management of multiple submissions across multiple PIs in a short span of time and with frequent interruptions. • Ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare summary reports as required. • Ability to analyze complex situations, identify workable solutions, and effectively balance service with regulatory compliance. • Outstanding organizational skills, ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, capable of self-direction, ability to deal diplomatically with people at all levels, a high degree of personal integrity and discretion, solid decision-making skills, and judgment. • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to communicate effectively and serve as a liaison between granting agencies, university administration and the principal investigators. • Intermediate level of experience with Excel and Word and the willingness to learn new technology.
