Gerda Henkel Foundation – PhD Scholarships
The aim of this scholarship program is to support highly qualified young scholars. The Foundation will only consider applicants who have proven their exceptional talents by means of their achievements in their studies and the results of their examinations and whose dissertations are expected to be well above the average. The duration and course of the studies, final grade, age and any special qualifications will play a significant role in the selection process.
The Gerda Henkel Foundation offers two-year scholarships for PhD students in the historical humanities, in particular to support research projects in the following fields:
- Archaeology
- Art History
- Historical Islamic Studies
- History
- History of Law
- History of Science
- Prehistory and Early History
2 years.
The period of support for Foundation stipend holders working on Ph.D. can be extended by up to 12 months if the holder becomes a parent during the period covered by the stipend and has an entitlement to maternity or parental leave.
1,400 euros/month, plus additional costs including family grants for candidates with children (details).
Applicants must:
- be 28-years-old or younger at the time of concluding their master’s studies.
- Applicants currently older than 28 may still apply if they were 28 or younger when they finished their master’s studies.
- Exceptions may be granted for the following situations: night school, bringing up children, military or civil service, work experience, and other exceptional circumstances.
- have an overall master’s grade average of at least 1.5 or above in Germany (comparable with grade A in other countries; foreign degrees will be reviewed separately).
- The Foundation will not grant scholarships for the completion of Ph.D. projects (“final scholarships”). A final scholarship is either a grant that succeeds another grant exceeding 12 months and bestowed by a different party and/or the application for a scholarship not exceeding 12 months.
