Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA) – Clay Postdoctoral Fellowship
The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) invites applications for the Clay Postdoctoral Fellowship 2019, which will be awarded to an outstanding researcher–or researchers–displaying significant promise in theory, observation, instrumentation, and/or laboratory experiments. The CfA combines the resources and research facilities of the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory under a single director. Now organized in six research divisions–Atomic and Molecular Physics; High Energy Astrophysics; Optical and Infrared Astronomy; Radio and Geoastronomy; Solar, Stellar, and Planetary Sciences; and Theoretical Astrophysics–nearly 350 Smithsonian and Harvard scientists work cooperatively in an environment that welcomes the ideas and contributions of young scientists.

- Stipends for the current academic year are $69,500.
- Annual research budget of $16,000.
- Full health insurance coverage for Fellows and their dependents.
- Relocation is $7,500.
- The Fellowship Committee welcomes applications from recent PhD recipients. A short postdoctoral period especially at the Ph.d. institution is not a disqualification.
- Candidates’ interests and proposed research programs should fall under an active field of research at the CfA.
- Applicants are expected to pursue research programs of their own conception and design, and they should state clearly why they believe that their professional goals would be furthered through research opportunities at the CfA.
- Applicants are expected to demonstrate their capability for original research through first-author refereed publications in major astronomy journals.
- For international candidates: The Clay Fellowship is considered a non-service fellowship and is not an employment position, therefore, only J-1 visas are issued to international exchange scholars.
