Japanese Consulate Monbukagakusho (MEXT) – Scholarships for Graduate Research
Monbukagakusho (MEXT), the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology offers four different scholarships for non-Japanese nationals wishing to study in Japan. Only U.S. citizens living within the following states can apply for a MEXT Scholarship at this Consulate: IL, IN, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD, WI. U.S. citizens living in other states should apply through the consulate responsible for their state. Non-US citizens should apply through the Japanese embassy in their country of citizenship. 18-24 months
Funding
- Monthly living allowance of 144,000 yen (Master’s student) or 145,000 yen (Doctoral student).
- An additional monthly stipend of 2,000 or 3,000 yen may be provided to those undertaking study or research in specially designated regions.
- Transportation to and from Japan (ecomony class air ticket).
- Tuition and fees.
Eligibility
Applicant must:
- Have the nationality of a country which has diplomatic relations with the Japanese government. An applicant who has Japanese nationality at the time of application is not eligible.
- Only U.S. citizens living in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin are eligible. Applicants living in other states should apply though the consulate for their state.
- Have, in principle, been born on or after April 2, 1984.
- Be a graduate from a Japanese university or have academic ability equal or superior to that of a Japanese university graduate (see website for further details and exceptions in the fields of medicine, dentistry or veterinary science, or pharmacy).
- Apply in their field of study or a related field, and the selected field must fit with programs available at the university of his/her choice.
- Be willing to learn the Japanese language, interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their understanding of Japan after arriving in Japan. Applicants must also have the ability to do research and adapt to living in Japan.
