Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) – Postdoctoral Research Program
NOTE: Applications are accepted in early April, July, October & December. Deadlines vary according to program.
The Postdoctoral (Postdoc) Research program offers the opportunity for appointees to perform research in a robust scientific R&D environment, present and publish research, advance knowledge in basic and applied science, and strengthen national scientific and technical capabilities.

There are several postdoctoral appointment types.
Fellows
Initial appointments are for two years, renewable for a third.
- Research Associates pursue research as part of ongoing LANL science and engineering programs.
- Director’s Fellows collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers on staff-initiated research.
- Agnew National Security Fellows pursue experimental, theoretical, computational science and engineering research aligned with the national security mission (see Identified Research Areas). Open to persons with the ability to obtain a DOE “Q” security clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.
- Nicholas C. Metropolis Fellows pursue research in the areas of computational and computer science, physics, and engineering (see Identified Research Areas).
Distinguished Fellows
Appointments are for three years.
- Marie Curie (MC) Fellow – Awarded to the highest-ranked women candidates. Open to all nationalities and research areas aligned with the Laboratory’s mission. For more information, see Madame Curie Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow Appointment.
- Richard P. Feynman (RPF) Fellow in Theory and Computing – Awarded to the highest-ranked candidates in theory or computing. Candidates must have the ability to obtain a DOE “Q” security clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.
- J. Robert Oppenheimer (JRO) Fellow – Open to all nationalities and research areas aligned with the Laboratory’s mission.
- Frederick Reines (FR) Fellow in Experimental Sciences – Awarded to the highest-ranked candidates in experimental sciences. Candidates must have the ability to obtain a DOE “Q” security clearance, which usually requires U.S. citizenship.
Postdoctoral Partnership Appointment
- Intelligence Community (IC) Fellows – In coordination with the Intelligence Community and the Department of Energy, this fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to collaborate with LANL scientists and engineers regarding staff-initiated research in areas that have the potential for future technological developments important to the Intelligence Community. This fellowship is open to those who have the ability to obtain a DOE “Q” Security Clearance, which usually requires US citizenship
For Fellows: 2 years, renewable for a 3rd.
For Distinguished Fellows: 3 years.
- Salary ranges from $72,200 – $106,000.
- Award includes a comprehensive benefits package.
Applicant must:
- Be sponsored by a technical staff member in order to be considered for a postdoctoral position.
- Have completed their PhD by the starting date of the postdoctoral appointment.
- Have completed their PhD within 5 years of their application for the postdoctoral appointment.
- Some positions require citizenship.
