Northeastern University (NEU) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL)
For Students
In an effort to provide experiential opportunities to its LEADERs students, Northeastern University is partnering with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the LEADERs-DGRP Fellowship program. LEADERs students selected to participate in the program will conduct research on a project designed by the student, their Northeastern PI, and a collaborating Researcher at PNNL.
Research Areas
Northeastern and PNNL have identified the following research areas, with additional areas to be added:
- data science and analytics
- resilient infrastructure
- network science and engineering
- social science
- computer science
Eligibility
- This program is open to new (entering) and current Ph.D. students who have completed or will concurrently complete Northeastern’s LEADERs introductory course.
- Since the intention is to engage fellowship recipients in research, students are eligible to apply when they have completed the majority of their coursework, have identified a research advisor, and have begun to engage in research toward their dissertation. Determination of whether students have met these qualifications will be at the discretion of a joint selection committee.
- Stipends, health insurance, and indirect costs, subject to the availability of funds at PNNL.
Award Details
- PNNL intends to engage the approved applicants in research projects at PNNL for time frames ranging from one semester to two years, during which projects will provide ongoing educational opportunities that are integral to the applicant’s doctoral education.
- In the first year of PNNL support, the students will be in residence for at least one semester at PNNL or as appropriate with the option for an additional period of at least one semester at PNNL in the second year as applicable.
- During the period of support, PNNL intends to provide reimbursement to Northeastern for stipends, health insurance, and indirect costs, subject to the availability of funds at PNNL.
Application Process
- Students do not apply directly. Instead, they are guided through an application process by a LEADERs representative. The representative will assist in matching the student and their Northeastern PI with a PNNL researcher.
- Students can express their interest in the program by completing this form.
- Once advisors have been identified and a research plan has been developed, advisors can submit an application on behalf of themselves and student. The application will be reviewed by a joint committee of NEU and PNNL representatives.
- Applications are typically submitted between November 1 and February 15 for consideration for the following Fall semester. However, exceptions may be made with NEU and PNNL support.
